When we think of the characteristics of an action movie star, the number one thing we can all agree on and automatically visualize is someone with huge muscles, and rugged good looks. If we’re to take a look back in time and shine our proverbial spotlight on action movie heroes of the past. The most memorable is Arnold Schwarzenegger, an Austrian born American actor, businessman, filmmaker and politician. Before becoming a famous Hollywood action movie star, Arnold was the most popular bodybuilder in the world.

Although he retired long ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still a house hold name amongst bodybuilders. Compared to most of his competitors during the height of his bodybuilding career, Arnold was humongous! When it comes to size, as one of the characteristics of an action movie star, Arnold took it to the heaviest level. He walked around at a whapping 260 pounds and went down to 235 pounds while competing. As a bodybuilder turned into an actor, Arnold proved that brains and brawn can coexist. He exemplified the acting talent required for all his roles, but if we’re to focus on massive, muscular physiques (and in this case, we are) Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was the first and remained at the top for many years.

As we discuss characteristics of an action movie star, we’re all on board that in many cases size does matter. That’s why Arnold Schwarzenegger was the “go to” of action movie stars for many years and now Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might be considered most popular by many movie fanatics. But we can also agree that bulging biceps is not the only important trait when it comes to characteristics of an action movie star. Dare we say “Sex Appeal” can be considered equally important as a massive physique? Well yes, we are saying it. Having big muscles isn’t always required to be an action movie star. Along with great acting talent (obviously), sex appeal has always and will always be one of the great characteristics of an action movie star. And one of the best of all time is none other than Mister 007 himself, Sean Connery.

Sir Sean Connery was a Scottish actor. He was the first actor to portray fictional British secret agent James Bond on film, starring in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches Connery was tall, dark and handsome with strong features. Sean made all his suites look so good, it made being a secret agent look more like a runway model. And in all the James Bond 007 movies, it was easy to see why the hero always gets the girl…and this secret agent kept getting all the girls over, and over again. The tradition of tall, dark and handsome men who made suites look fantastic while playing the role of Agent 007 continued in more recent years with Daniel Wroughton Craig, also an English actor who starred in five installments in the film series, from “Casino Royale” up to “No Time to Die”.

The last and most interesting traits we will discuss are humour and nerdy…wait, did we just say nerdy? Yes you read it correctly; we said nerdy which brings us to The Spider-Man franchise. The crime fighting, web slinging, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is actually not much of man at all. Behind the mask of this super hero is a witty, nerdy student. “Spider-Man” centres on student Peter Parker who, after being bitten by a genetically-altered spider, gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface and vows to use his abilities to fight crime.

Not typically famous for having a lot of sex appeal and obviously not bodybuilders. The actors that played Spider-Man brought more wit, humour and were all somewhat nerdy. Although “nerdy” is not synonymous with characteristics of an action movie star, nerdy is required for the Spider-Man character and worked well in all the movies. In the most recent years Spider-Man was played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.
